With the sun beating down on the King George V playing fields, Compton & Chandlers Ford won the toss and elected to stand in the field in the heat of the day. St Cross got off to a strong start with a steadfast opening partnership. Angus Tilney (34) and James Fletcher (38) built to a solid 61 in the face of disciplined bowling and a tight field. A couple of quick wickets followed, bringing George Scrivener (39) to the crease steadying the ship and batting with James Moore (16) and Thomas Fryer (19) to set C&CF a target of 180.
With the heat coming out of the day, St Cross bowlers took advantage of the frazzled opening bats, keeping the opposition pegged to just 23 runs for one wicket off the first 10 overs. Superb bowling performances from Jasper Tilney, Angus Tilney, Abdul Asmari & Ben Tucker (and a wicket on debut from Otto Grant), alongside some sharp wicket keeping from George Scrivener meant C&CF never really got going, with St Cross claiming valuable league points with a few overs to spare.
Special mention goes to Abdul for keeping the game alive for far longer than necessary, running away from a catch that flew high into the sun such that he lost it and was left ducking for cover.
