For match 10 of the 2025 season St Cross 5s were hosted by Easton & Martyr Worthy CC 2 nd XI. All morning the
weather, damp, and the forecast for the rest of the day was patchy. It felt an important toss to win with the obvious
choice, bowl first. The flip of the coin did not fall in favour of captain Fin’s plans and we padded up as the last of the
rain fell from a grey looking sky.
Our openers Navashen Dubey and George Scrivener were looking good for a short while when George Scrivener fell
to the eventual bowler of the day Sam Boxer, who ended with figures of 8-4-14-6. With some resistance from Ben
Appleton (21) and the Stone brothers there was not much else to write home about. St Cross 5s were bowled out for
68 off 26.2 overs.
No tea was taken; it was decided we would go straight back out again for the chase. Intensity in the field was high in
the hope of an early breakthrough. Finlay Graham applied good pressure to the Easton’s openers in the first over.
Jordan Harper’s first ball, a magic one that clipped something igniting a huge appeal that was good enough to send
their opener back to the pavilion without scoring. What did that hit we all asked while we anticipated a fight back.
Are we back in it…………..? No! Easton knocked off the remaining runs in under 10 overs.
This was uncharacteristic of a team in good form and could well have challenged the top team of the league on
another day. We will need to take this one on the chin and go again next week when we host No.2 in the league
Mottisfont CC, at least we will be at Cheriton.
