Men’s 3s lost to Rowledge 2nd XI by 83 runs

The target never felt beyond reach

At The Alan Taylor Field we fell short in pursuit of 296 against Rowledge 2nd XI, although on an exceptionally flat pitch in the hottest conditions of the year, the target never felt beyond reach.
After losing the toss, St Cross worked hard in difficult bowling conditions and found real control through the combined spin efforts of debutant Casper Wilson and Gavin Buckle. Wilson impressed immediately on his first appearance, finishing with excellent figures of 3-44 from nine overs, while Buckle claimed two wickets of his own as the pair stemmed the flow of runs through the middle overs and kept St Cross firmly in the contest.
Stevie Fryer also picked up two wickets, while Pierre Forster added another pair as the attack continued to battle despite the batter-friendly surface. The visitors were driven by an explosive 89 off 59 balls from their in-form batsman, who capitalised on the excellent conditions before eventually being dismissed by Buckle.
The standout fielding moment came from Oli Knight, whose catch on the boundary was simply outstanding. Sprinting around the rope at full pace, Knight launched into a full-length diving effort to complete a brilliant catch that lifted the side late in the innings.
Chasing 296, St Cross lost early wickets before Pierre Forster and Felix Inglis rebuilt the innings impressively. Inglis struck a positive 30, while Forster anchored the chase superbly with a classy 74 from 93 balls, finding the boundary 11 times and keeping St Cross firmly in contention.
The key moment came with the dismissal of Stevie Fryer. After helping swing momentum back towards St Cross with an aggressive 31, Fryer was run out in bizarre circumstances at the non-striker’s end by a blind, behind-the-back throw that somehow crashed into the stumps. It was an extraordinary piece of fortune that completely shifted momentum back towards the opposition just as St Cross were threatening to launch a serious charge.
Rishi Thareendra then provided late hope with a lively 22 from just 16 balls, striking cleanly and aggressively to keep the chase alive deep into the innings. Ultimately, though, Forster ran out of partners as wickets fell around him, with St Cross eventually bowled out for 212 in 39.3 overs. This defeat leaves the 3s bottom of Division 2B and searching for a crucial victory to kickstart their season.
