Under a blazing 30-degree sun that felt more suited to a beach holiday than a cricket match, Eversley CC Women’s 1st XI battled hard against St Cross Symondians CC Women’s 2nd XI in a sweltering contest full of grit, sweat, and plenty of sunscreen.
After being put into bat, Eversley dug in bravely despite the energy-sapping conditions. The outfield was lightning quick, the air completely still, and every run seemed to require the effort of three. Wickets fell steadily, but the team kept fighting through the heat, eventually posting 127 all out in 28.1 overs — a score that felt very competitive given the sauna-like conditions.
With temperatures climbing and water breaks becoming just as important as wicket breaks, Eversley took to the field knowing they’d need a big effort to defend the total. Spirits stayed high despite the melting fielders and increasingly creative attempts to find shade between deliveries.
St Cross Symondians paced their chase sensibly, keeping the scoreboard moving while making the most of the tiring conditions. Eversley continued to battle hard in the field and picked up three wickets along the way, but the visitors eventually reached 129/3 with (Charlotte finishing on 46 and Steph 37*) in 24.2 overs to seal the win.
While the result didn’t quite go Eversley’s way, the real victory may have been simply surviving 30-degree cricket in black trousers and a dark top. It was a tremendous effort from everyone involved — proof that women’s cricket can deliver both quality cricket and serious endurance training at the same time!
