Women's 1st XI Showcase Unbeatable Performance

Emma Tayler

By Richard Trussler

Yateley won the toss and elected to field first, setting the stage for a strong St Cross batting display. The innings was given early momentum by Nicole and Iris, who settled things before Nicole fell for 11. Iris Eshelby then took control with an energetic 35 off only 28 balls, playing with intent before being run out. Maisie Ayers added a steady 19, helping to build a platform for what quickly became the standout performance of the innings. That platform was fully capitalised on by Emily Lawler, who produced a spectacular 131 off just 89 balls with 20 fours, her first hundred either here or in Australia – St Cross brings out the best in players! Refusing to do The Cross at both her 50 and 100 milestone, the girls gave her a bit of stick but we’re sure throughout the season she will be taught. At the other end, Caity Smyth played a superb supporting role with a composed 49, narrowly missing out on a well-deserved half-century after being run out. Freya Watkinson added a brisk unbeaten 10 to finish the innings strongly. The team posted an imposing total of 295–7 from their 40 overs.

In response, the bowling unit started with energy, applying pressure from the outset. Freya led the attack with an impressive spell, taking 3 wickets for 5 runs in 5 overs. Katie Jones also made a strong impact with 2 wickets, while Ella Ingham and Emma Moore both chipped in with a wicket apiece. The fielding effort matched the intensity of the bowling with excellent energy, constant communication, and a number of sharp moments in the field, including three well-taken run outs. The overall performance reflected a strong all-round team effort to defend a commanding total.

We now have both St Cross Women’s teams on top of their divisions, and we march on in the National Cup.
