At Aldershot the 2nds were only able to field 9 players, but it was a fabled blend of youth and experience! Sarah Johns (SJ) marked her debut by top scoring with 33, which included three 6s on a big ground. SJ was Winchester Hockey Club Ladies top scorer last season as they won the Hampshire League, and she will be a considerable asset to our cricket club. Also getting to double figures were youngsters Scarlett Hale (15) and Emma Phillipson (10 on debut), whilst Penny Moss held the latter part of the innings together with a painstaking 19. We totalled 116 (for 8 wickets down) in 25 overs, and with two fielders short Aldershot must have been confident of victory.

Although Scarlett took two early wickets, both clean bowled, to leave Aldershot 3 for 2 after 3 overs, they steadily but slowly re-built, getting to 50 after 16 overs, and with another 19 overs to get 67 runs and 8 wickets in hand they would have been fairly confident. Coach Jack Middleton must have given a great team talk over drinks, as first Penny had their no 4 caught for 17, then Mandy Mowatt bowled the remaining opener for 22. Wickets now tumbled, with two more for Mandy, another for Penny, and an incredible three runs outs (by a fielding team with two players short!), as Aldershot collapsed in a heap, losing 8 wickets for 18 runs in 10 overs as our ladies stormed to victory. Mandy finished with 3 for 16, Scarlett 2 for 7, and Penny 2 for 8, and we exuberantly bagged 20 points.

Next Sunday afternoon the 1sts are at home to Stony Stratford in the National Cup 3rd round, and the 2nds are also at home – to Railway Triangle in the league. All spectators and supporters are welcome!
